LIFE IN THE WEST MODERN DAY: MAYAGÜEZ,PR PRE-DEATH, Ameyro was born in the western mountains of Puerto Rico, during the pre-colonial era of the island. He was raised alongside his sister, with two parents who taught him to hunt and fight. A warrior is what Ameyro was destined to become.Then the Spanish arrived. It did not take long for things to turn to violence. The war took his family piece by piece. His sister was the first to die, struck down by the butt of a conquistador’s firearm. His father, a warrior himself, fell in the early battles against the invaders. His mother disappeared during the flight from their home, swallowed by the chaos of war and never seen again.In the west, stories spread of the drowning of Diego Salcedo, the Spanish officer whose death proved that the invaders were not immortal, nor were they gods. Ameyro fought in the same resistance, joining raids and strikes against the conquistadors with renewed determination.For years he waged war against the men who had taken everything from him. Eventually, the conflict drew him north, toward the plains and harbors of what would one day become San Juan. More ships arrived in the north with every season, and that is where Ameyro believed the island’s fate would ultimately be decided.

LIFE IN THE NORTH MODERN DAY: SAN JUAN,PR DEATH, The northern coast was where the Spanish had their largest settlements. To Ameyro, it was the place where the war had to end. What he wasn’t prepared for was to be identified among the officers. Perhaps it was a brother of Diego Salcedo, or maybe a friend. Or simply, it was someone who wanted vengeance for the humiliation of a drowned conquistador.Whatever it was, Ameyro became a marked man. He was captured after a failed escape, hunted down by a group of officers who were determined to make an example of him. After his capture, he was dragged to the shoreline.There, in cruel imitation of the very act that had shattered Spanish claims to divinity, the conquistadors forced him beneath the waters of San Juan. They held him there until his body ceased to struggle. They did not return him to the shore. His remains were cast into the sea and left to drift.For years, he was lost.

DEATH IN THE EAST MODERN DAY: EL YUNQUE, PR REBIRTH, Death did not end Ameyro’s story. Ocean currents carried what remained of him eastward, far from the western mountains where he was born and far from the northern waters where he died.A compassionate soul would take what little of his body remained, burying him in the rainforest of the mountains. Finally, giving him the peace that he was so violently denied.Through the power of Baibrama, the Taíno zemi of yuca cultivation and resurrection, his body was re-formed from the roots of the earth. Organic plant matter gathered where his remains were laid to rest, and constructed a corporeal form for him to inhabit.But the being that rose from the soil was no longer entirely human. Ameyro returned as something closer to a hupia, a spirit of the dead sustained by Baibrama and Maquetaurie, zemi of the underworld.It is after this rebirth that he adopts the name Zum-Zum, a direct translation meaning hummingbird. In Taíno tradition, the hummingbird is one of the strongest symbols of love. The story of Taroo and Alida tells of a lover transformed into a hummingbird so he could continue searching for his beloved forever. Ameyro sees himself in that legend, driven by devotion to his family and home.

LIFE IN THE USA NYC/BOSTON POST-DEATH, Immortality forced Ameyro to adapt to a world that changed around him. At some point after his resurrection, he left Puerto Rico and eventually settled in the continental United States. To navigate modern society, he adopted the surname Narváez, blending with the wave of latino immigrants in NYC.Over the centuries, he became a formidable magical practitioner. Unlike many occultists, his understanding of death is rooted in renewal rather than domination. His magic emphasizes ancestral connection and the enduring bond of love.In the modern era, he serves as an occasional ally to the Justice Society of America. Historians, mystics, and heroes seek him out when they need firsthand knowledge of ancient myths or supernatural phenomena tied to forgotten histories.
