LIFE IN THE WEST MODERN DAY: MAYAGÜEZ,PR PRE-DEATH, Ameyro was born in the western mountains of Puerto Rico, during the pre-colonial era of the island. He was raised alongside his sister, with two parents who taught him to hunt and fight. A warrior is what Ameyro was destined to become.Then the Spanish arrived. It did not take long for things to turn to violence. The war took his family piece by piece. His sister was the first to die, struck down by the butt of a conquistador’s firearm. His father, a warrior himself, fell in the early battles against the invaders. His mother disappeared during the flight from their home, swallowed by the chaos of war and never seen again.In the west, stories spread of the drowning of Diego Salcedo, the Spanish officer whose death proved that the invaders were not immortal, nor were they gods. Ameyro fought in the same resistance, joining raids and strikes against the conquistadors with renewed determination.For years he waged war against the men who had taken everything from him. Eventually, the conflict drew him north, toward the plains and harbors of what would one day become San Juan. More ships arrived in the north with every season, and that is where Ameyro believed the island’s fate would ultimately be decided.

LIFE IN THE NORTH MODERN DAY: SAN JUAN,PR DEATH, The northern coast was where the Spanish had their largest settlements. To Ameyro, it was the place where the war had to end. What he wasn’t prepared for was to be identified among the officers. Perhaps it was a brother of Diego Salcedo, or maybe a friend. Or simply, it was someone who wanted vengeance for the humiliation of a drowned conquistador.Whatever it was, Ameyro became a marked man. He was captured after a failed escape, hunted down by a group of officers who were determined to make an example of him. After his capture, he was dragged to the shoreline.There, in cruel imitation of the very act that had shattered Spanish claims to divinity, the conquistadors forced him beneath the waters of San Juan. They held him there until his body ceased to struggle. They did not return him to the shore. His remains were cast into the sea and left to drift.For years, he was lost.

DEATH IN THE EAST MODERN DAY: EL YUNQUE, PR REBIRTH, Death did not end Ameyro’s story. Ocean currents carried what remained of him eastward, far from the western mountains where he was born and far from the northern waters where he died.A compassionate soul would take what little of his body remained, burying him in the rainforest of the mountains. Finally, giving him the peace that he was so violently denied.Through the power of Baibrama, the Taíno zemi of yuca cultivation and resurrection, his body was re-formed from the roots of the earth. Organic plant matter gathered where his remains were laid to rest, and constructed a corporeal form for him to inhabit.But the being that rose from the soil was no longer entirely human. Ameyro returned as something closer to a hupia, a spirit of the dead sustained by Baibrama and Maquetaurie, zemi of the underworld.It is after this rebirth that he adopts the name Zum-Zum, a direct translation meaning hummingbird. In Taíno tradition, the hummingbird is one of the strongest symbols of love. The story of Taroo and Alida tells of a lover transformed into a hummingbird so he could continue searching for his beloved forever. Ameyro sees himself in that legend, driven by devotion to his family and home.

LIFE IN THE USA NYC/BOSTON POST-DEATH, Immortality forced Ameyro to adapt to a world that changed around him. At some point after his resurrection, he left Puerto Rico and eventually settled in the continental United States. To navigate modern society, he adopted the surname Narváez, blending with the wave of latino immigrants in NYC.Over the centuries, he became a formidable magical practitioner. Unlike many occultists, his understanding of death is rooted in renewal rather than domination. His magic emphasizes ancestral connection and the enduring bond of love.In the modern era, he serves as an occasional ally to the Justice Society of America. Historians, mystics, and heroes seek him out when they need firsthand knowledge of ancient myths or supernatural phenomena tied to forgotten histories.

THE TAINO MYTHOLOGY THAT INSPIRED AMEYRO'S CREATION

Baibrama - Guardian of the Plantation REINCARNATION
Baibrama gained the role as "Guardian of the Plantation" at the same time he gained his ability to resurrect and heal. There was a war in the beginning of time, where Baibrama almost faced his demise.His limbs were burned and his eyes were gouged out from his body. While he kneeled, awaiting death, he found himself rescued by his believers.The black, boned char from the burns were washed off his body and his limbs were regrown through the power of the Yucca juice. His vision returned to him, where he saw his people and the beautifully cultivated fields of Yucca.As a gift to his people and their love, Baibrama took on responsibility for the fertilization of the fields and farms, to ensure they do not decay.Yucca is an extremely poisonous plant, only ready for consumption after careful preparation and the proper growth. The Tainos believed this was Baibrama's punishment for those who dared harvest from the farms after neglecting their duties.

Baibrama - Guardian of the Plantation RESURRECTION
From the ashes of the burnt fields and the seemingly lifeless joints of the yuca, a seed is pushed into the ground; soon it is to sprout the green shoots of new life.This time of renewal is the realm of Baibrama— a grimacing, cadaverous shaman with wide eyes. He is life in the midst of death. Once decapitated, his head grows back from the root; once blinded, his eyes coalesce again like dewdrops; once amputated, his limbs sprout like fresh branches.For he is rebirth incarnate.

Maquetaurie Guayaba - Dwelling Lord of the Dead COAYBAY
Maquetaurie is the lord of the underworld, overseeing Coaybay-- an earthly eternal paradise where the spirits of the dead settle.It was said that Maquetaurie was the first resident of Coaybay. He was saddened by the reality of death for humanity. Unable to withstand the unfairness of death, he begged to the mother of all.He begged for her to create a realm of existence after death for the humans. A place where dead spirits can celebrate and never be forgotten.In Coaybay, Maquetaurie and the spirits roam freely. They dance, celebrate, and sing. The sound of mayohuacan, a drum made from a hollowed trunk, thunders throughout the paradise along with maracas, the botou, the quena, and shells.Maquetaurie and his people eat from the guayabas (guava), a fruit named after the zemi. It is said that during the night, Maquetaurie turns the spirits in Coaybay into bats so they canfeast.

Hupia - The Spirit of the Afterlife MAQUETAURIE'S SUBJECTS
It was believed that both the living and the dead have a spirit.The spirit of the living is called, "goeiz" and the spirit of the non-living is called, "opi'a" or "hupia."During the day, the hupia hide. Only at night is when the hupia come out to feast on guayaba (guava fruit) and celebrate with the living. The hupia have the ability to take on any shape, which includes (but is not limited to) the face of loved ones or humanoid faceless beings.No matter what form a hupia takes, there is an absence of a belly button. The belly button is a mark of life, since every child was once attached and nourished by an umbilical cord. Hupia do not experience being birthed again; therefore, they do not have a belly button.

The Hummingbird - Story of Taroo and Alida LONG LOST LOVE
This story starts off with Alida and Taroo, a young couple who met at a small pool in the middle of the forest. During their time together, they quickly discover that their tribes were sworn enemies. Despite learning this, their interest in one another never fades. So the two continue to meet at the pool in secret. All is well for a while…until Alida’s father discovers her rendezvous with Taroo.He confronts Alida, enraged by her betrayal of the tribe. Determined to not let her relationship with Taroo grow, he swears to marry her off to another man the next day. Alida, in desperation, calls out for the spirits to rescue her from the fate of marrying a man she does not love. Hearing her pleas, an unknown spirit turned her into a red flower (Flor de Maga — Thespesia grandiflora).After Alida did not show up to their meeting site, Taroo wandered the land in hopes that he would find her. However, day by day his search was unsuccessful. The spirit who transformed Alida into a flower caught sight of a lost Taroo. Once they realized who Taroo was searching for, they informed him of what happened. Upon hearing about the fate of his love, Taroo pleaded with the spirit for a means to find Alida. The spirit, taking pity on Taroo just as they had with Alida, turned him into a Hummingbird.It is said that whenever a Hummingbird is spotted, fluttering from flower to flower as if it cannot make up its mind, it is actually Taroo searching for his long-lost love.
